If you are an employer, you know the hiring process can be extremely difficult. You want to make sure that whoever you hire is qualified for the job and that they will help your company continue to grow and prosper. A resume can only tell you so much about a person; you need to actually get to know them to tell if they’ll be a good fit, what you need are the top tips for hiring the right employees. You’re in luck, here are the top tips for hiring the right employees to fill that next vacancy.

  1. Focus on the potential of your prospective employee. Though it might seem like the most important thing in the world to hire someone based on the right skill set alone, good personal traits are key. Skills can be learned and taught, however, personalities cannot. You’d rather have someone who is optimistic and willing to learn than someone who has the right skills but is uncooperative and rude. Focus on how far you think the person can go and is willing to better themselves rather than where they are at right now.
  2. Find the right personality that fits the job. Again, personality is key. Think about it this way, you would not want a person who dislikes children to be a preschool substitute teacher, just as you would not want a very vain person to care for people when they could do better at modeling. Consider the type of person you want working in the position, especially when you have customers to think about as well.
  3. It’s super important to ask the right questions. Obviously, people will lie if you ask them very direct questions about their personalities. They want the job and are willing to spin tales of how they all have “people skills, are outgoing, friendly, and responsible with their time and other things.” That’s not to say that everyone is lying, but it is better to ask questions about them, like “What is the naughtiest thing you have ever done?” or “Why do you want to work for us?” Get them to think and you’ll see more of their true colors.
  4. Let the people you are interviewing interview you as well. Invite them to ask you questions and see what kind of questions they ask. You want them to be listening and paying attention to what you are saying, if they ask questions, it is a sign that they are eager to learn and are naturally inquisitive.
  5. A personal favorite of ours is to have existing employees sit in in the interview. This proves as an awesome tool for us to not only get the perspective of our trusted employees, but even more so to determine whether the new employee will be a culture fit.
